YAIMA CARRAZANA | Diva of Geneva EXHIBITION 1st February - 15th March 2013 OPENING Friday 1st February, 4pm - 8pm The Studio Sandra Recio kicks off 2013 with the exhibition "Diva of Geneva", conceived especially for the Studio space by Cuban artist Yaima Carrazana (*1981). In Diva of Geneva, Carrazana playfully revisits a significant movement in art history—the monochrome, synonymous with artists such as Kazimir Malevich and Ad Reinhardt. In continuity with the exploration of women's experiences of previous works, the artist sumptuously reproduces a selection of trendy shades from a brand of nail polish with glamorous connotations. The paintings take their titles directly from the provocatively named polishes, allowing Carrazana to participate in art history in her own way, all the while upending a frequently male-dominated institution. Educated at the San Alejandro National Academy of Arts in Cuba and at Amsterdam's Rijkssakademie, her work has recently been shown at the Gwangju, at the Istanbul and at the Havana Biennales, at the Haifa Museum of Art (Israel), at the Wilhelm-Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen (Germany) and at the Elba benítez in Kvadrat gallery (Madrid). An artist's book is published on the occasion with a text by Cuban curator and art critic Lillebit Fadraga.

In 2002, Tania Bruguera initiated Cátedra Arte de Conducta, the first performance and time-based art studies programme in Latin America devoted to political art. According to the artist, this alternative art school was designed to explore ‘the way in which ethics, ideology and history intertwine with memory, sociology, history of art’. The Cátedra, an enterprise now concluded, promoted a new generation of political artists whose international recognition is the most important result of Bruguera’s initiative. The former participants (now artists in their own right) will work in Liverpool around two themes: the utopian city and Allan Kaprow’s cultural and artistic legacy. These two apparently separate topics are in fact linked through their mutual aims: they attempt to ‘touch’ the city; they deconstruct and question the traditional notion of museum (as the only physical and mental space where art can be presented, consumed and produced); and they cut across the demarcation lines that separate politics, art and life. Bruguera and Lorenzo Fusi jointly selected the participants committed to this collective experiment of institutional critique: Ana Olema Hernández Matamoro, Ariel Orozco Rodriguez, Carlos Martiel, Reynier Leyva Novo, Lavastida Cordovi Hamlet, Jeanette Chavez Ruiz, Jesus Hernandez Hernandez, James Roger Bonachea Guerra, José Fidel García Valenzuela, La Vaughn Belle, Levi Enrique Orta Mendoza, Loidys Carnero Pineda, Núria Gu¨ell Serra, Omni- Zonafranca (group), Yaima Carrazana Ciudad, Yali Romagosa Sanchez, and Bram Kaprow.
Group Show Though they come from all over the world there is one thing they have in common: their works all touch the theme of identity. The groupshow exhibits works by international artists: Billal Baruk Taright (FR), Francisco Camacho Herrera (CO), Liam Thickner (DE), Przemek Dariusz Fronczak (NL) and Yaima Carrazana Ciudad (CU). Unveiled Identity Unveiled is a groupshow with sculptures, photography and video-work. Artpocalypse Collective http://www.artpocalypsecollective.com/post/691227927/unveiled-identity-unveiled
